La Porte City Band will close their series of performances at the Dennis Smith Amphitheater in Fox Park this Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Their Wednesday night performances have been a favorite and we gratefully applaud Director Steck and the band members for entertaining us this summer.
Arts in the Park is thrilled to work alongside The La Porte City Band by providing refreshments for the Wednesday night audience. Concessions are overseen by Nanda Danitscheck, Ashley Otis, and Lisa Denger with the help of La Porte area youth.
Pre-concert activities, starting at 6:30 pm, include Patrick Watterson on the keyboard and artwork by¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ Dave Russell. Russell has fun sports-oriented watercolors and prints of major league teams. At 6:45 poetry will be performed by Joanne Thornburg.
Thursday, String of Pearls comes to the amphitheater, co-sponsored by Aerometals and Pine Lake Realty. Sponsors such as these are invaluable as they enable Arts in the Park to continue to bring great performances to the public for free.
String of Pearls is an engaging trio, returning for the fourth time with hits of the Big Band Era. The three vocalists are Northwest Indiana Hoosiers, Gail Brown, Jessica Metros and Linda Skidmore. Their high-energy performance, done in a style reminiscent of the Andrew Sisters and the McGuire Sisters, will engage the audience with classic melodies and swinging songs that will be sung long after the park is empty.
String of Pearls has performed in Brandon, Missouri with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. These vocalists have entertained in Indiana for years. One of their concerts helped raise funds for the Veterans Memorial Parkway in Munster, Indiana.
Tri Kappa Associates will have goodies “Poppin’ in the Park” including drinks, popcorn, and cookies. Come early for the pre-concert activities which start at 6:30. While Patrick Watterson plays the keyboard. Then, Tom Vinseck, a member of Maple City Word Crafters will read poetry at 6:45. Dave Russell’s artwork will again be on display.
Mark your calendar and don’t forget. You want to be at the park singing songs such as, “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” not wishing that you had written the reminder so you didn’t miss this event.
String of Pearls is only one of the great bands you can hear for free in August. Arts in the Park looks forward to bringing you Wednesday night performers, such as Dr. Groovy and the Soul Surgeons, La Porte High School Marching Band, and Junior & The Igniters and Thursday night performances by Windiana, Me & the Boys, and The Tom Milo Band.
