LAPORTE | You are invited to Arts in the Park 6:30 pm Wednesday and Thursday at the Dennis Smith Amphitheater, Fox Park on Truesdell Avenue. The concerts each night are free. Reservations are not required.

On Wednesday at 6:30 Patrick Watterson opens selection on the keyboard. At 6:45 pm Mayme Stump, a member of the Ruth Coffeen Poetry Circle and a former LPHS English teacher, will present the poetry of the late Lynn Gaylord, La Porte County Poet Laureate 2011. La Porte City Band led by Charles Steck performs at 7:00.

Thursday’s featured band is Cripple Creek, a fun band with a fun sound, who return after an enthusiastic response to last year’s Arts in the Park concert. They claim, “Cripple Creek is just a group of guys that like to get together and sing.” They’ve been doing that well for years playing gospel and country music for charities such as La Porte Hospital Foundation Holiday Pops and Door Village Holiday Festival.

The band is made up of lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Lou Voelker, Mitch Marhanka doing bass, baritone and bass guitar, John Langford handling harmonica, whistler, and singing harmony and David Applegarth on guitar and singing tenor. The soundman is Steve Eyrick.

This year Cripple Creek gifts their performance at Arts in the Park as a courtesy to the community. Thank you, Cripple Creek.

Come early Thursday to settle in, enjoy visiting, and take advantage of the pre-concert activities. Patrick Watterson plays keyboard from 6:30 pm. At 6:45 former La Porte High School teacher, Jo Thornburg, will read the poetry of reigning La Porte County Poet Laureate, Julie Kessler.

Watercolors by local artist Dee DeVincent will be on display both Wednesday and Thursday. DeVincent’s works are familiar to those who have visited Beach Bum Jewels in Michigan City. She likes to paint various topics, but landscapes and nature are favorite subjects.

Concessions are provided by friends of the La Porte City Band on Wednesday and by Tri Kappa Associates on Thursday. Both groups are appreciated for the service they provide.
