LAPORTE | Don’t miss the La Porte City Band concert on Wednesday, the last day of July! Arts in the Park offers activities before the concert which is at Dennis Smith Amphitheater at Fox Park on Truesdell Ave. The activities include an artwork display by a local artist to be announced, keyboard music by Patrick Watterson, and poetry presented by Dr. Scott Simerlein.

Simerlein is a three time runner up for the La Porte County Poet Laureate and 2013 Poetry Co-chair for Arts in the Park. He has done a great job of scheduling poets throughout this summer’s program.

Arts in the Park also provide concessions operated by Nanda Danitscheck, Ashley Otis, and Lisa Denger and La Porte area youth. Wednesday pre-concert activities begin at 6:30. The band plays at 7:00.

Are you wondering if it’s worth your time? Here are two quotes from that night. The first was about Patrick Watterson’s relaxing mood music. “I could listen to that all night while reading a book.” The other was from a band member who said they enjoyed listening to the poetry and thought it was a really nice addition to the program.

Even though summer is rushing headlong through the calendar, take time from the garden and the canning and enjoy an evening in the park. Grab your noisy kids, dust off the beach sand, pick up the grandparents or elderly neighbor and head over to Fox Park for the free August concerts by accomplished artists. Arts in the Park has a tremendous lineup of performers.

Thursday the Hobart Area Concert Band, the first of the August performances, is sponsored by Family Express. Formerly known as The Rusty Pipes, Hobart Area Concert Band will perform at the Fox Park Dennis Smith Bandshell on Truesdell Avenue in La Porte at 7 p.m. Truesdell Ave.

The band was established in 1979 and has performed continuously since that time. Ray Grivetti of La Porte is the founder and was first director of the band. Susan Williams is the present director. There are seventy-two members ranging from high school students to adults age 94.

Hobart Area Concert Band plays with one goal in mind: To provide enjoyable music for members and audiences of all ages in the Northwest Indiana area and beyond. This year those audiences heard the band at Portage Woodland Park, Hobart Elks’ Flag Day Concert, Hobart Festival Park Concert, the Hobart July 4th Parade, and most recently at Indiana Dunes State Park.

The band is looking forward to performing in La Porte as part of the Arts in the Park summer program. Come on out and hear them.

Preconcert activities start at 6:30 with Patrick Watterson on the keyboard. At 6:45 Cathy Buckman will read the poetry of Yvonne Elshout, who was named La Porte County Poet Laureate two years running.

Corrections about previous programs:

1. Donna Sekula and Dave Russell showed their artwork July 23 and 24.

2. HiFi2WiFi’s Thursday performance was sponsored by Tri Kappa, not Tri Kappa Associates.

3. The photo of Patrick Watterson was taken by Paige Pope and used by permission.

4. Artist Dee DeVincent was rescheduled to show her work later in the season.
