LAPORTE | Escape to LaPorte County where you will discover unique artisan treasures and locally produced products on the Northern Indiana Art & Earth Trail.
The Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission (NITDC) has developed the Art and Earth Trail across the Northern Indiana area. This trail promotes many unique artisan and agri-tourism experiences throughout the region. The Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission (NITDC) is a regional tourism development organization whose membership includes 7 Northern Indiana convention and visitors bureaus (Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange, LaPorte, Marshall, Porter and South Bend/St Joseph counties). The 7 trail loops are accessible from the Indiana Toll Road, however I encourage you to start here in LaPorte County and see what is available in your own back yard.
The trail is a significant economic development initiative that has increased visitation and visitor spending in Northern Indiana.
A map/online guide describes a drivable tour of artistic and agricultural venues where guests can experience the art, culture and food of the region in its native environment. Some of these tour stops include a potter's studio where guests can watch or interact with the potter at work, take a ride on a steam-powered trail or ride a horse-drawn wagon and pick your own apples. Each of these stops is connected with driving directions and auxiliary stops that help guests understand and experience LaPorte County and the Northern Indiana regional culture. Some of these additional stops include a historic inn, a restaurant featuring locally grown products or a museum of local history. The trail offers experiences one family at a time or a few visitors traveling via their own personal vehicle to 'off-the-beaten-path' places - studios, galleries, in-home studios, farms, inns, etc.
You can start your adventure by picking up a brochure at the LaPorte County Convention & Visitors Bureau office, 4073 S Franklin Street, Marquette Mall, Michigan City or by visiting www.artandearthtrail.com
