LAPORTE | A bid has been accepted to demolish the old north side fire station in LaPorte.
The contract for $15,871 was awarded to Pavey Excavating, Inc. of LaPorte by the city's redevelopment commission.
Mayor Blair Milo said Monday night that water and sewer hook ups to the building along Pine Lake Avenue have been disconnected in preparation for the demolition.
She said when the actual tear down will occur hinges on how soon the gas and electric to the structure are disconnected.
“I would imagine it's going to be in the next few weeks or so,” Milo said.
The building was vacated in 2007 when a new north side fire station opened on East Shore Parkway.
Officials said the condition of the building has deteriorated and become an occasional haven for homeless people.
Removing the building is also desired because it sits on the edge of the former Allis Chalmers property, a 150-acre parcel targeted for redevelopment.
