Two Portage men are charged after LaPorte County Police opened the trunk of the vehicle they were driving and allegedly found a large amount of marijuana.
Julian Duron and Jeremiah Stone, both 20, were booked into the LaPorte County Jail on dealing marijuana charges, a Class D felony.
Just before 10 p.m. Thursday, a LaCrosse man reported a possible burglary in progress at in the 200 block of Genesse Street.
He then followed the vehicle occupied by the suspects along with two Portage teens, according to LaPorte County Police.
The caller kept giving police updates on their whereabouts northbound on U.S. 421 then westbound on U.S. 30.
Units from the Porter County Sheriff's Office and Valparaiso Police showed up to assist at a traffic stop on U.S. 30 near the Porter County Municipal Airport, police said.
The vehicle was owned by the father of a 17-year-old girl inside the vehicle and he gave officers permission to search the car, police said.
Police said a white plastic bag containing nearly one pound of marijuana was removed from the trunk.
One of the girls told police they first first went to a house in Portage where Duron and Stone came out and placed a cardboard box into the trunk.
All four of the individuals went to Michigan City and then LaCrosse where the box containing another two pounds of marijuana was carried into the residence, police said.
They came out of the house with the suspected bag of marijuana later confiscated from the trunk, said police.
The girls were allowed to go home after one of the females told police she knew about the marijuana but gave Duron and Stone a ride only in return for gas money.
Police said Duron may have just moved to the LaCrosse residence.
The home was still vacant and there was no food inside but Duron kept two pit bulls in the home, which was littered with animal urine and feces, police said.
Stone told officers he was just released from prison on parole last week.
According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, Stone was let out March 5 after serving a sentence out of Benton County for theft, receiving stolen property and residential entry.
