LAPORTE COUNTY | A company has been hired to audit the books of an organization that serves the elderly and disabled throughout LaPorte County.
Blue & Co., an accounting firm at Indianapolis, will examine the books of Parents and Friends, the organization that operates the LaPorte County Council on Aging.
A decision was made last month to close the COA, which provides rides to senior citizens to medical-related appointments and guardianship over the finances of the elderly and disabled no longer capable of handling those affairs.
Closing due to the threat of legal action was reversed for 60 days to try and come up with a solution to continue with the services.
LaPorte County Commissioner Dave Decker said the audit needs to be completed before the 60-day extension and the cost of the audit is being paid with monies from the LaPorte County prosecutor's office.
PAF cited financial troubles from higher expenses and no government funding increases for the decision to close.
Officials with PAF also claimed the COA was losing money for a couple of years but did know until the third chief financial officer the group has had recently turned up the red ink.
