Authorities say a LaPorte burglary suspect tried getting away from the police by wading across Pine Lake -- but changed his mind when he was neck high in cold water.
A shivering Shane Robinson was brought back to shore in a paddle boat and even helped one of the officers with paddling.
"We hauled him off to jail and got him some nice dry warm jail clothing," LaPorte County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ron Heeg said.
Just after 1 p.m., officers chased Robinson after receiving a call about a burglary in progress at his ex-girlfriend's home in the 600 block of Muir Court.
Officers, with help from a tracking dog, began closing in on Robinson, who began venturing across a cove to get away.
Police said halfway across is when he gave up -- too cold and tired to make it back to shore himself, police said.
LaPorte County Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer said a paddle boat along the shoreline was used to reach Robinson, who after hanging on and being pulled a short distance climbed into the watercraft.
"He realized, I think, that he made a mistake when he got out there into that water. It was pretty cold," Mollenhauer said.
