LAPORTE | A pet dog died Sunday in a downtown LaPorte fire.

Firefighters saw black smoke coming out the windows about 2 p.m. of an upstairs apartment in the 800 block of Madison St.

LaPorte Assistant Fire Chief A.C. Pressler said one of the rooms sustained fire damage while the rest of the apartment sustained smoke and water damage.

The occupants of the apartment were at nearby IU Health LaPorte hospital visiting a relative when the fire broke out, police said.

The cause of the fire is not known.

The family's small dog died in the blaze, Pressler said.

Damage to the structure and contents was estimated at $50,000.
