LAPORTE | The final carillon recital in the summer series of the Presbyterian Church of LaPorte Fine Arts Board will be at 4 p.m. Sunday. The carillonneur will be Wylie Crawford, of Chicago.
Crawford is the University Carillonneur at the University of Chicago, a position he has held since 1984. He is also the resident carillonneur for the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe (since 1986) and was the first city carillonneur for the Millennium Carillon in Naperville.
He is the president of the World Carillon Federation (www.carillon.org), a federation of international associations that organizes conferences in countries with a carillon culture.
With an undergraduate degree in physics and a graduate degree in teaching from the University of Chicago, Crawford initiated the first regular carillon instruction programs at four Chicago-area carillons.
In 1977 he fulfilled the requirements of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America to become a certified carillonneur. During his 39-year association with the guild, he served three years as its vice president and is currently the chair of its membership committee and a member of the GCNA Web committee (www.gcna.org).
He has given carillon recitals in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Sweden and the U.S. He appears occasionally as The Spirit of the Bells at various Renaissance Festivals on one of the three North American traveling carillons.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the music from the church lawn, or listen from your car. The Presbyterian Church of La Porte is at Kingsbury Avenue and U.S. 35 south. For more information, call (219) 362-6219 or access the Fine Arts web site at www.LaPortePresbyterianFineArts.org.
