LAPORTE COUNTY | An Aurora, Ill., man riding as a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his wife was killed Sunday night in an accident on the Indiana Toll Road.
Robertino Maldonado, 57, of Aurora, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident in the eastbound Indiana Toll Road five miles east of the Ind. 39 exit to LaPorte, Indiana State Police said.
Maria Maldonado, his wife, was driving west at 7:16 p.m. when she lost control of her 2010 Honda while changing lanes. Police said she hit the right guardrail, crossed both westbound lanes, drove through the center median and into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes, hitting a 2011 Freightliner semi head on.
The semi was being driven by a Duluth, Minn., man for Halvor Lines out of Superior, Wis. The semi driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, police said.
The load of plastic products he was hauling remained intact.
Robertino Maldonado had to be extricated from the 2010 Honda. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
His wife, Maria, was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Both of the Maldonados were wearing seat belts.
All eastbound lanes except the shoulder were closed until 9:27 a.m. for accident investigation and cleanup.
