A Westville police officer was back on the job Wednesday after being stabbed with a spoon.
Officer Steve Ames responded to a home Monday night at Westville Estates on a report of a disturbance.
Ames was trying to gain control of the situation when Matthew Pavlick stabbed him on the head with a serrated edge spoon commonly used for eating grapefruit, police said.
Ames called for back up and Pavlick, 27, had a spithood placed over his head due to his constant attempts to spit on the officers, police said.
No specifics about the reported disturbance were given, but police revealed Pavlick was not taking his medicine for a mental health condition.
Ames was taken by ambulance to Porter Regional Hospital where he received stitches to close the wound.
"He's doing real well," Westville Town Marshal Jim Gunning said.
