KNOX | Guest speaker David Hyatt, president of Indiana University Health Starke Hospital, spoke to the membership of the Bass Lake Property Owners Association at its most recent meeting Nov. 10. Hyatt gave an overview of the progress made in medical care since IU Health La Porte Hospital leased the facility over three years ago.
In his presentation, Hyatt spoke of the $5 million worth of upgrades made in services and equipment by IU Health La Porte Hospital. Another positive action taken by the hospital was partnering with the county in bringing Advanced Life Support ambulance service to Starke County residents.
The CEO also said the hospital staff is committed to the motto, “Being the best at everything we do.” He noted patient surveys are showing a steady increase in care satisfaction, but said management will not be satisfied until the hospital is in the 90th percentile of patient care—placing the hospital in an elite category.
In answer to a question from the audience, Hyatt said negotiations are still ongoing for IU Health La Porte Hospital to purchase the IU Health Starke Hospital facility from the county. He said that no firm decision has been made on a new hospital if an agreement is reached. It was noted by the President that the building, which was built in the 1950s, is not configured to the needs of a 21st-century hospital.
Hyatt urged those in attendance to visit the new Wellness Center, and to meet with trainer Heather Skelly. The center is open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Monday-Friday.
