The King Gyros in downtown LaPorte is closed indefinitely due to alleged health code violations.

LaPorte County Health Department environmental health food supervisor Lana Buckles said the five critical violations included storing meat and other perishable items at temperatures higher than 50 degrees when the recommended storage temperature is 41 degrees or below.

Among the other violations were raw meat being stored above bread, which poses a contaminant risk if blood drips on the bread, she said.

Action was taken May 8 to close the restaurant when the owner, Norma Herrera of Schererville, failed on two consecutive times to show up for administrative hearings to address the citations, said Buckles.

She said many of the violations were also found during a previous inspection in March.

Buckles said the restaurant at 715 Lincolnway can reopen only if the owner shows up at a future hearing and corrects the violations.
