LAPORTE | The city's only movie theater is closing for the third time in three years.
Despite major facility upgrades, there just were not enough customers, said Neal O'Connor, owner and operator of the building.
LaPorte Cinema closed in 2009 then reopened a few months later when another operator, Cinemajestic, took over the theater.
Cinemajestic left in March and O'Connor decided to operate the theater himself, shutting the doors to make other improvements before reopening in May.
O'Connor said his wife lives in California and he was hoping to make enough of a profit to hire a full-time local operator so he could spend more time with her at their home.
O'Connor, however, said not enough business was coming in to afford hiring a manager. The last movie will be shown Sept. 6.
"Being so far away it was never really viable for me to run a retail business some 2,000 miles away," O'Connors said.
