LAPORTE | A LaPorte official accused of fleeing police for not wearing his seat belt will keep his seat over the objections of the mayor.
Mayor Blair Milo on Tuesday called for the City Council to rescind its appointment of Tim Stabosz to the city's Historic Preservation Commission.
By a 5-2 vote, the council rejected the mayor's request in front of dozens of vocal Stabosz supporters.
Some council members felt the actions of Stabosz did not warrant removal given his years of excellent work on the commission and dedication to the city.
“We've all made mistakes,” said Councilman Joe Mrozinske.
According to LaPorte police, on Jan. 10 Stabosz made several quick turns and sped up rapidly after seeing a squad car. Stabosz was not wearing his seat belt.
Officers were trying to catch up to Stabosz who was driving fast enough for his 1987 BMW to fishtail turning onto Lincolnway, said police.
After traveling four additional blocks, the lights and siren on a police car following Stabosz were activated and he pulled over.
