LAPORTE | Money has been approved to fund the new LaPorte County Office of Economic Development.
The LaPorte County Council voted Monday night to allocate more than $150,000 to cover the salary of the new director and other costs.
The office was created after the newly elected LaPorte County commissioners took their seats, but without money in place to fund operating expenses.
The commissioners requested nearly $200,000 but a lesser amount was granted to evaluate how the office is functioning before deciding on the remainder of the funds, said LaPorte County Councilman Matt Bernacchi.
Officials said the goal of creating the office is to make it easier for prospective companies to do things like obtain information about potential sites and speed up job creation efforts.
"The goal is to move LaPorte County forward and create jobs," said Bernacchi.
