LAPORTE COUNTY | The first roundabout for LaPorte County is on the drawing board at a busy intersection near Michigan City.
LaPorte County Commissioner Dave Decker said the roundabout is planned on Johnson Road at 400 North, now governed by a traffic signal.
Decker said the project is made possible by a federal grant that will pay 80 percent of the cost.
No formal cost estimates have been obtained but the expense could be more than $500,000, he said.
Decker said the grant funds projects like roundabouts, which reduce idling from vehicles to reduce vehicle emissions.
Traffic flow also is expected to improve at an intersection often used by motorists traveling between Michigan City and LaPorte.
He said the construction could occur this year depending on how fast a design for the roundabout is chosen and other preliminary engineering work completed.
