LaPorte County Parks recognized for state award
LAPORTE | The LaPorte County Parks was recognized for a state award from the Indiana Parks and Recreation (IPRA) for its facility development of a new shelter at Luhr County Park. This park is part of the 74 acres located south of LaPorte and features four ecosystems: upland forest, wetland, prairie, and a stocked pond, open to fishing.
The new addition, White Oak Shelter, provides seating for 100 and can be reserved by the public for family reunions, wedding receptions, birthday parties, and high school graduations; as well as environmental education programs. White Oak Shelter is adjacent to the Nature Center and close to parking, public restrooms, water and electric. The shelters are available for rent April 1 to Oct. 31 each year.
The award was given under the category of "Facility Development Award". Thanks to the County Prosecutor Attorney's infraction fund which provided funds for the shelter from monies paid from speeding tickets given in the county. This money allowed them to purchase the materials to build this shelter.
"It is partnerships like the Prosecuting Attorney's whom the funding came from that have made the County Park facilities like White Oak Shelter some of the nicest park facilities in the State of Indiana," said Tim Morgan, superintendent.
The award was presented to LaPorte County Parks in Michigan City on Jan. 19 at the Indiana Parks and Recreation Association annual Conference.
