LAPORTE | A LaPorte man is accused of being drunk when he drove into the side of a firetruck.
Neil Hackett, 23, told officers he was heading back from a beach party in Michigan City when the Tuesday evening collision occurred, according to LaPorte County police.
He was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated with an alleged blood alcohol content of .24, which is three times the legal limit.
Police said he was westbound on Johnson Road when he came upon a Center Township fire truck partially in the roadway.
The driver of the fire engine, Jack Ott, 50, following a training exercise was preparing to back the truck into the fire station when he noticed the oncoming car.
Ott sounded his horn, but Hackett failed to stop slamming into the side of the firetruck, causing extensive damage to the car.
Police said Hackett and his passenger, Shawn Graham, 22, also of LaPorte, were treated at the hospital for abrasions.
Ott was not injured.
