LAPORTE | A man caught while on a marijuana run for his friends was sentenced Wednesday to two years of home detention.
Dennis Vanmeter was ordered in LaPorte Circuit Court to wear a satellite tracking device so authorities can track his whereabouts.
Vanmeter pleaded guilty to a felony charge of possession of marijuana under a plea agreement.
In November, Indiana State Police, acting on a tip, responded to Cassidy Motel at 3845 N. Ind. 39, according to court documents.
Vanmeter, 58, of LaPorte, was found with marijuana in his room and vehicle along with nearly $2,000 in cash.
Defense attorney Greg Hofer told the court his client was involved with a group of people consisting of steelworkers, iron workers and other blue-collar workers.
Most of them also were Vietnam veterans and they pooled their money to buy marijuana, Hofer said.
"It was his turn to go get it," Hofer said.
