LAPORTE | Trash collection fees in LaPorte are going up to generate money for street repairs.

The City Council on Monday approved a $2 increase in monthly garbage collection fees for residents and businesses that use the municipal service.

Mayor Blair Milo said about $200,000 a year will be raised annually from the rate increase for repairs to streets.

The condition of the streets has been a major issue for years due to lack of funds, but Milo said the state may release more money for local municipalities to repair streets.

"We still got a long way to go,” Councilman Dave Schmitt said.
