LAPORTE | Officials are giving serious thought to a ban on smoking in La Porte parks.

The City Council last week voted to send a measure calling for a total ban on all park department land to a committee for review and a possible vote at the July 1 council meeting.

Councilman Ron McAtee said some people feel having designated areas in the parks to smoke is more fair than a complete ban.

"We have a lot of adults who do smoke and they may not want to be banned," said McAtee.

Beechwood Municipal Golf Course is one of the park department properties some officials felt should not come under a ban.

The proposed ordinance was drafted because of concerns that include cigarette butts collecting in dugouts at the baseball fields and children in traditional parks being exposed to a bad example.
