LAPORTE | A LaPorte woman is accused of beating her two children while drinking whiskey after they turned down the radio she was playing loudly.
Kristal Walker, 38, was arraigned Wednesday in LaPorte Circuit Court on two counts of Class D felony neglect of a dependent.
According to court documents, police were called to the 400 block of Glenwood Avenue early Jan. 15.
A 14-year-old boy told police he and his 15-year-old sister were home when their mother began drinking with two men at the residence. He went upstairs to bed and Walker turned up the radio.
According to court documents, the boy went back down and asked her to turn the volume down. She refused and the boy turned down the volume halfway.
The boy said he went back upstairs and after the volume was turned up again, he and his sister went downstairs asking their mother again to turn down the radio. She refused and allegedly began fighting with her daughter, who at some point left the home.
Police said the woman pushed her son down on a couch then struck the boy's foot with the base of a lamp post. The boy was also slapped and punched repeatedly in the face and neck.
According to court documents, the boy was taken to the hospital with a badly swollen foot he thought was broken along with a red face. The girl had several marks and scrapes on her body, police said.
Police said there was broken glass and alcoholic beverage bottles on the floor. Walker could face a sentence of up to three years on each of the counts.
