LAPORTE COUNTY | Charges have been filed against a LaPorte area man who is accused of allowing his 80-year old mother to remain on the living room floor for two days after a fall.

Michael Huisar, 53, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on a Class C  felony charge of neglect of a dependent.

The woman fell Jan. 19 in a home she was residing in with her son in the 3800 block of South Mitchell Drive.

According to court documents, the woman remained on the floor for two days with no water and just cat food within arm's reach to eat.

She was found two days later after her son called 911 and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

It's alleged Huisar failed to do what he could to help her up off the floor and care for her nutritional needs.

According police, Huisar said he assumed his mother was able to get up off the floor herself and called 911 after returning from work to find her still lying in the same spot on consecutive days.

Conflicting stories have been given on how she wound up on the floor, but doctors told police there was evidence she had a stroke but they were not sure exactly when that occurred, court documents revealed.

If convicted, Huisar could face a sentence of two to eight years.
