WESTVILLE - Purdue University North Central will host seven area high school teams as they compete in the fifth annual LaPorte County Senior Academic Super Bowl Invitational on Thursday, March 7 in the Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02, located on the PNC Westville campus, 1401 S. US 421 • Westville. Registration begins at 3:45 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Participating schools are: LaPorte High School, Michigan City High School and Marquette High School of Michigan City; LaCrosse High School; Elkhart Christian Academy; North White High School of Monon and a team of home schooled students, representing Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.

The 2013 competition theme is "The Glory That Was Greece." Students will vie in the rigorous competition covering six subject areas - English, science, fine arts, social studies, math and interdisciplinary. Trophies will be given to the winning school in each subject area as well as an overall winner. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third place finishers. Each competing student, coach, proctor and student assistant will receive a voucher for use at the PNC Gallery Café, Coffee Central and the PNC bookstore. Coffee Central will be open until 7 p.m. and the café and bookstore will be open until 8 p.m.

Registration will begin at 3:45 p.m. There is a coaches and proctors meeting at 4:10 p.m. The competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a welcome by PNC Chancellor Dr. James B. Dworkin.

The competition schedule is:

4:40 p.m. - Fine Arts, Judy Jacobi, PNC assistant vice chancellor of Marketing and Campus Relations

5:15 p.m. - Social Studies, Dr. Patrick Cannon, visiting assistant professor of Social Sciences and academic coordinator of Concurrent Programs

5:50 p.m. - Mathematics, Jerry DeGroot, continuing lecturer of Mathematics

6:25 p.m. - English, Sarah White, continuing lecturer of English

7 p.m. - Science, Dr. Jason Curtis, associate professor of Biology

7:35 p.m. - Interdisciplinary, Dr. Mark Jacobi, Michigan City pediatrician

8:15 p.m. - Awards, Paul McGuinness, vice chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Services

Academic Super Bowl competition in Indiana is part of the Indiana Association of School Principals, Department of Student Programs. It is a unique inter-scholastic academic competition which allows Indiana's senior high, junior, middle and elementary school students an opportunity to compete in academics similar to the way youth compete in athletics. These competitions recognize, reward and celebrate scholars.
