LAPORTE COUNTY | Riding a freight car dates back to the days of train robbers and hobos.
It hasn’t gone out of style judging by four individuals caught inside a Norfolk Southern freight car Sunday near Rolling Prairie.
About 7 a.m., a conductor learned that a group of people were unlawfully riding on the westbound train, which was halted.
Police said two men and a woman from Virginia and a woman from Nebraska all in their 20s were found riding in one of the freight cars along with two small dogs and a kitten.
They were also carrying large backpacks of food and two guitars, police said.
According to police, the stowaways revealed they boarded the freight car in the Pittsburgh area two days before and were heading to Chicago then Colorado.
They were traveling across the country visiting restaurants and convenience stores along the way. Officers reportedly did not arrest the four people last seen walking away from the stopped train.
However, their names and other personal information were turned over for the railroad to place into a database for possible filing of trespassing charges, police said.
