LAPORTE | Police in LaPorte are investigating allegations that a Porter County man with a cellphone snapped a picture underneath a 19-year-old woman's skirt at Kmart.
Police were led to the man by pictures the woman took of the fleeing suspect's license plate.
According to police, the plate led investigators to the suspect, who is listed as a registered violent sexual predator from Porter County.
The woman told police that about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday she was trying on a Halloween wig in one of the store aisles.
The woman first saw the man's reflection in a mirror then after he walked down the aisle next to her she saw him reach down holding a cellphone.
She then heard a “click,” according to police.
The woman told police she immediately confronted the man and demanded to see his cellphone.
The man began quickly walking toward the front doors and she followed him outside taking pictures of him and the license plate on the vehicle he was driving.
Police said the man contacted his probation officer about the incident but denied that his cellphone has a camera.
He later showed up at the police station for questioning.
LaPorte police Detective Brian Phillips said the man was not arrested but the matter was still being looked into.
He would not speculate when the case might be presented to prosecutors or whether criminal charges will result.
“If warrants end up being sought it would take a few days to go through the process,” said Phillips.
He would not disclose if any evidence was gathered from the man's cellphone.
“We can't really go into specifics of it,” said Phillips.
