Police said a Union Mills man driving in the opposite lane for a mile ran several motorists off the road Sunday -- allegedly while impaired.

About 1 p.m., LaPorte police said at least two calls were received about a 1998 Ford Expedition driving in the opposite lane of Ind. 39 near the municipal airport.

A number of oncoming motorists swerved off the road to avoid head on collisions.

The suspect was on Lincolnway when police made a traffic stop.

No alcohol was found in his bloodstream but two bottles of prescription medication were located in the vehicle, police said.

He was taken to IU Health LaPorte hospital where a blood test was taken.

The results won't be known for about a week but warrants are being pursued charging him with Class C felony driving with a license suspended for life and Class D felony operating while intoxicated.
