LAPORTE | The city of LaPorte will partner with residents to fix more sidewalks and curbs.

Under a measure adopted Monday by the City Council, the city and property owners will equally share the cost of sidewalk repair.

The goal is to allow property owners to get their sidewalks fixed sooner instead of waiting, perhaps, years for the city to get around to repairing the sidewalks, officials said.

The program is available only to homes occupied by the owners.

Under the measure, property owners are required to water any newly planted grass seed around the sidewalk until the grass has taken full hold and notify the city about any defective work.

The condition of sidewalks has long been a major issue due to lack of funding and several years ago resulted in the city losing a lawsuit due to deplorable sidewalks not being navigable by people in wheelchairs and with other handicaps.
