LAPORTE | A proposed ban on smoking in the parks in LaPorte has been defeated.

The LaPorte City Council voted against the ban Monday that would have applied to all park department property, including Beechwood Municipal Golf Course.

Among the reasons for the proposal were complaints about cigarette butts littering the grounds and a negative influence on children seeing people smoking.

City Councilman Ron McAtee said there were concerns about smokers feeling discriminated against and some park property like the golf course being used primarily by adults.

"I'm not in favor of having smokers in some places, especially where there are children," said McAtee, who revealed the measure could be revised later to achieve fairness for all parties involved.

"I think there are ways we can work around it without having to ban those people from the park system," McAtee said.
