LAPORTE | A suspect in a downtown LaPorte bar shooting that left a man in critical condition early Tuesday was on the run.
The victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said.
"It was touch and go," said LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi on Tuesday about the victim's condition.
The names of the suspect and victim were not being released, along with other specifics, due to the ongoing investigation.
Police said after 2 a.m., a man walked into Ellian's Pub at Lincolnway and Michigan Avenue across from the courthouse and confronted another man, who was shot during a verbal exchange.
The suspect was described as a black man wearing a white T-shirt and jeans and driving a black 2000 Chrysler 300, police said.
Later in the morning, sources close to the investigation revealed officers searched the home of the suspect's girlfriend on Monroe Street, but no one was inside the residence.
The suspected getaway car was located, though, near the home.
Szilagyi said anyone who might encounter the suspect is advised to contact police immediately.
"He shot somebody and, as far as we know, he might still have a pistol," Szilagyi said.
