Two men robbed a gas station at gunpoint Thursday afternoon in LaCrosse but with help from the victim and a customer police quickly apprehended two suspects.
Joshua Riley, 25, and Michael Carlisle, 19, were being held Friday in the La Porte County Jail, accused of Class B felony robbery.
According to La Porte County police, officers about 3:30 p.m. responded to a report of a robbery at Will's Service Center at 105 S. Washington St.
The investigation shows the owner, Mike Hucker was behind the counter manning the register when two men, one holding a gun, went inside.
The two robbers with more than $600 in hand were running from the gas station when a customer getting fuel grabbed a gun from his vehicle and pointed it at one of the fleeing suspects, telling him to “hold it,” police said.
The men kept running and got into a vehicle, but Hucker and the patron running after them were able to get a license plate number and good vehicle description, said police.
Deputy Sinclair Rashaun spotted the SUV in the area of Ind. 39 and Ind. 8 and gave chase.
Units from Indiana State Police, the city of Knox and Starke County joined in and the men pulled over and were apprehended, police said.
The arrests were made about a half-hour after the hold up.
“That's just terrific that they were able to capture those two individuals that quick,'' said LaPorte County Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer.
All of the money was recovered. Both men are from Delaware but were staying in the LaCrosse area for quite some time, police said.
“They were not just traveling through,” said Mollenhauer.
Riley also has a warrant out in Delaware for his arrest on an undisclosed crime, police said.
