LAPORTE | More than 1,300 people from several states took part in the Tour de LaPorte last year, and expectations are again running high for this year's bicycling, running and walking event.
The 12th annual Tour de LaPorte is scheduled Saturday and Sunday at Soldiers Memorial Park in LaPorte.
Events include a 21K chip-timed competitive run and chip-timed competitive runs of 10K and 5K, along with a 5K non-competitive walk.
There also will be a distance cycling event of 5 to 100 miles throughout LaPorte County.
Family participation in the event is also encouraged by a mini fun run of 50 to 200 yards for children ages 4 to 8.
The event is sponsored by the LaPorte Hospital Foundation as a fundraiser to benefit local cancer patients.
Maria Fruth, vice president and chief operating officer with the foundation, said all proceeds go to assist cancer patients in ways such as help with transportation to doctor's appointments, providing wigs and paying for prescriptions and other bills.
Some of the proceeds pay for cancer screenings.
Fruth said a majority of the participants come from within a 60-mile radius but others come from as far as Ohio and Kentucky.
She said one reason the event draws from a wide area is the 100-mile bicycle ride, appealing to many cyclists looking to test their endurance, and the beautiful route.
"We sometimes have five or six states represented," said Fruth.
There's a mixture of bicycling and events on foot Saturday, while Sunday is dedicated to all cycling, she said.
