Criminal charges are being considered after a 1-year-old child in a diaper wandered away from a LaPorte home where the only adult present was allegedly sleeping after drinking alcohol.
Warrants are being sought by police to charge that person along with the mother and father with child neglect.
However LaPorte County Prosecutor Bob Szilagyi there are still key questions that need to answered before deciding who to charge.
"I think the issue is intoxication. Who knew what and when," said Szilagyi.
Police responded just before 11 a.m. Tuesday to a call about a child in a diaper wandering around the parking lot at the Country Acres apartment complex on Boyd Boulevard on the city's east side.
The names of the people at the home and other specifics were not released due to the ongoing investigation, but they were ages 26 through 34.
Police did say the responding officer determined where the toddler lived and discovered three other children, all under the age of 5, inside the residence also unsupervised.
A woman inside was asleep.
According to police, alcohol was consumed in the home Monday night and the parents left Tuesday morning about 30 minutes before the toddler was spotted outside unsupervised.
Police said the parents returned while officers were still at the scene and at least two of the three adults at the home seemed impaired.
Szilagyi said the parents were negligent if they knew the woman was sleeping or intoxicated prior to leaving.
The woman was negligent, though, if she was awake and knew the children were solely in her care before falling asleep and, perhaps, drinking again, he said.
''Those are the questions I got to get answers to,'' said Szilagyi.
