LAPORTE | Texting between two young people from Westville has landed one of them in jail on felony sex crime allegations.
Mitchell Wright, 18, made his initial appearance Friday in LaPorte Circuit Court on two counts of Class C felony sexual misconduct with a minor.
Wright is accused of having sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl on two occasions in December.
According to court documents, Wright and the girl exchanged text messages for about two months starting in early October and each of them expressed a desire to have sexual intercourse.
On one occasion, the investigation shows that Wright during a basketball game at Westville High School asked the girl to accompany him outside, police said.
He then escorted her to a shed behind the school where he and the girl allegedly engaged in sexual contact. The other alleged sexual encounter also occurred at the school shed.
When questioned, the girl told police Wright went ahead with the encounters after she informed him she was 14.
Wright was being held on $800 cash bond. An omnibus hearing for July 20 is set in the case.
Each of the counts filed against Wright carries a potential two- to eight-year sentence.
