LAPORTE COUNTY | LaPorte County police are investigating suspicions that alcohol was involved in a single-vehicle crash that left six people hospitalized. The driver, Ashton Harradon, 23, of LaPorte, was listed in serious condition Monday at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, according to hospital officials.

Dustin Umphrey, 21, also of LaPorte, was in good condition at the same hospital, officials said Monday. Empty beer cans were found in the car and at least one of the passengers smelled like alcohol, police said.

According to police, Harradon was traveling Fail Road early Saturday near 850 North.

Harradon told investigators she suddenly "passed out" before her 2001 Ford Escort struck a tree, police said.

Hospital officials said the four other passengers were admitted and have since been released. LaPorte County Police Maj. John Boyd said a blood draw was ordered for Harradon but it could take a few days to get test results back from the hospital.
