LAPORTE COUNTY | A Valparaiso man was killed Saturday in a single-vehicle crash outside Michigan City.
Luqman Oda, 32, of 76 E. U.S. 6, was pronounced dead at the scene by LaPorte County Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman, who said Oda died of massive internal injuries.
Police on Monday said Oda was intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration nearly three times the legal limit.
Police said Oda was southbound on County Road 525 West near Warnke Road early Saturday.
The investigation shows he was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve and veered into the northbound lane before leaving the roadway.
His car struck a fence then a tree head-on.
Police said Oda and a front seat passenger, Mohammed Lakhani, were ejected from the 1997 Honda Civic, which sustained heavy front end damage.
"It was a large tree," said Huffman.
Lakhani, 36, of Anaheim, Calif., was transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City with a hip injury.
He was later taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, police said.
Lakhani told investigators Oda was driving fast as soon as they left Oda's brother's house on their way to Gary.
