WESTVILLE | A woman had her burned-out apartment near Westville looted of diapers and other items given to her at a baby shower.
LaPorte County police on Friday were called to University Village along U.S. 421 across from Purdue North Central.
The woman told police she moved out when her apartment building caught fire nearly two months ago, but she still had some of her belongings in her unit.
She had not been at the apartment since Sept. 22 but showed up Friday because demolition of the apartment building at 1912 S. Fountain Drive was expected to begin within a few days, according to police.
Police said the woman found her door ajar and 15 to 20 cases of diapers missing.
Other items taken included a popcorn popper, food processor, three large bags of clothing and tools, police said.
Entry into her apartment could have been made through a door that had a broken lock, police said.
Door locks throughout the building were damaged by firefighters busting through doors to battle the mid-August blaze.
The apartment building, which has 16 units, was destroyed by the fire. Investigators ruled the blaze was caused by an electrical malfunction.
University Village officials said plans call for a new building to be erected once demolition is completed.
