BB gun found during search at Michigan City High School
MICHIGAN CITY | A random search of Michigan City High School students was performed Friday morning in response to reports of a possible gun.
Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek said credible information surfaced Thursday that a student had a gun and boarded a bus with the firearm, which students saw him place into a backpack.
Superintendent Barbara Eason-Watkins agreed to a request by police to randomly search students and their belongings while showing up for school the next day.
One high school student was found with a black BB gun similar in size and color to a real handgun, police said.
Swistek said the student will be disciplined by the school corporation and face "legal consequences."
He said tobacco products were seized from another student during the search.
