LAPORTE COUNTY | An elderly Rolling Prairie couple were killed when they pulled out from a stop sign into the path of oncoming traffic on U.S. 20.
Hobert West, 88, and his wife, Leota, 84, were in a car that pulled out from a stop sign on 450 East into the path of a westbound pickup truck about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The driver of the truck swerved but hit the rear passenger door of the West vehicle, which was then struck by a second pickup truck on the driver's side, police said.
Hobert West was pronounced dead at the scene while Leota West died soon after arriving at IU Health LaPorte Hospital.
LaPorte County police Sgt. Mike Kellems said the intersection is wide open with no hills or anything else that could have prevented West from seeing oncoming traffic before pulling onto the highway.
"It's one of those mysteries we'll never be able to answer," said Kellems.
The driver of each pickup truck involved in the collision refused medical attention, police said.
