MICHIGAN CITY | There are many reasons to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables. Locally grown fruits and vegetables are usually harvested within hours of being purchased by the consumer. Whether you buy them at a farm stand, farmers market, or visit a farm and pick them yourself, you will be getting food with exceptional taste. Local farmers raise and sell wonderful, unusual varieties of products that you will never find on supermarket shelves. Local food is about the future and by supporting local farmers today, you can help ensure that there will be farms in LaPorte County tomorrow, and that future generations will have access to nourishing, flavorful, and fresh food. I hope to see you out there at the market this season.

Garwood Orchard Farm Market

The Garwood Farm Market offers a variety of fresh, high quality, homegrown (and locally grown) produce. Depending upon the season, you will find blueberries, peaches, cucumbers, peppers, apples, zucchini, sweet corn, tomatoes, raspberries, cherries, beans.... and the list goes on! You'll find preserves, honey, dressing, salsa, sauces, popcorn, syrups, noodles, and candy. In April and May you can expect to find asparagus, morels, vegetable plants and flowers. In June through August, Garwood's features fresh strawberries, blueberries, peaches, sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, and green beans. In September through November, enjoy apples, pumpkins, hard squash, cider and so much more.

And they bake fresh, delicious pies, cookies, and donuts right there in the Farm Market. Garwood's also offers wholesale produce to area businesses.

They are located at 5911 W 50 S, LaPorte, IN 46350 and can be reached by

Mark's Farm Market & Greenhouses

Mark's is a 3 season's operation located at 4374 W US Hwy 20, LaPorte, IN 46350, phone 219.873.0624.

Their greenhouses open in late April with annual flower flats, hanging baskets, patio pots, annuals, perennials, herbs and a huge selection of vegetable plants. They carry a large selection of these plants through June. July through October is produce season and Mark's has a large selection of homegrown and locally grown vegetables and fruits. In December they open again to sell Christmas trees and wreaths.

Riverside Marketplace

Riverside is an eclectic indoor marketplace featuring farmer's, local artisans and vendors, plus each week you can enjoy live entertainment and demonstrations.

New managers Joel and Patricia Majot said, "It is time to think about the 2013 season at Riverside, the season begins on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th 10am-3pm, then summer hours start on Memorial Day weekend when the market is open Thursday-Sunday. We can't wait to see familiar faces and new ones as well."

Public transportation is available by using Michigan City Transportation and the market is within walking distance from South Shore and Amtrak Trains stops.

Riverside Marketplace is located at 234 E 2nd St, Michigan City, IN 46360.

Spire Farmer's Market

Spire Farm-to-Fork, the restaurant that only prepares what is in season from local farms, will be hosting a farmer's market featuring all of the farmers, growers, and producers that supply Spire with their goods. The market will be the third Thursday of every month from May through October from 10am-2pm pm in the Spire Farm to Fork parking lot, 299 W Johnson Road, La Porte, IN 46350.

Uptown Farmers Market

The Michigan City Farmers Market has changed its name to the Uptown Farmers Market and they have been an anchor of the summer in the Uptown Arts District in Michigan City, for over a decade. While long-time Farmers Market volunteer, Gerry Peters, will be sorely missed, the Uptown Farmers Market and the market's farmers are excited to continue providing the fresh produce and delicious treats you have come to enjoy.

During this period of change, the new Uptown Farmers Market will reflect innovative ideas for an improved market experience and will include new vendors to complement our existing farmers' offerings.

The Uptown Farmers Market will open May 4th on the corner of 8th and Washington Streets in Michigan City. Open from 8am until noon (CDT), the Farmers Market (just one block east of Lighthouse Place Premium Outlet) features locally grown fruits and vegetables in season, as well as craft items, flowers, pastries and herbs. New to the market this year will be prepared food from local restaurants, music, chef demonstrations, and picnic tables.

The market will also host bake sales, wine tastings, and other special events. Kia Bergerson is the new market manager and she can be contacted at 219-210-2055
