MICHIGAN CITY | The Franklin Street drawbridge at Michigan City's lakefront will be closed at times next week for inspection.
The bridge over Trail Creek will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the mayor's office.
The bridge will be open Thursday and Friday but closed periodically throughout the day.
According to the mayor's office, the historic bridge is being inspected to prepare for a $1.5 million rehabilitation to replace worn gears and other parts.
The future of the bridge is somewhat in doubt because of a study ordered two months ago to determine if a stationary bridge is more feasible due to the cost of upkeep for the drawbridge and traffic back ups that occur when the bridge lifts up to allow sailboats to safely pass underneath.
