A parolee from Gary was arrested near Michigan City following a foot pursuit for allegedly carrying a gun.
According to LaPorte County authorities, an officer responded to a report of a suspicious male Friday along U.S. 20 near Evergreen Plaza.
Police said the man started running and Deputy Andrew Morse, with his K-9 dog "Jager," discovered a pair of handcuffs in a driveway along with a wallet belonging to Tracy Smith.
Investigators said Smith jumped a fence but was found hiding under a wooden fence.
The gun he was allegedly carrying was found sticking up above the snow in a backyard nearby.
Police said he's charged with serious violent felon in possession of a handgun, a Class B felony, along with Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.
His prior records includes a robbery conviction from 1994, police said.
