MICHIGAN CITY | Soon you will be seeing Super Boats driving up Franklin Street, in front of local businesses, and in Washington Park.

LaPorte County accommodations are filling up, as race teams and race fans pour into the area, and the excitement builds for the 5th Annual Great Lakes Grand Prix. You will be seeing large powerful and fast catamarans and vee bottom style boats, as they prepare for the race on Sunday August 4th.

On Thursday, August 1st the community kickoff party at Washington Park will begin at 5pm followed by a special VIP event at the Clubhouse Bar & Grill, 415 E US Hwy 20 in Michigan City starting at 7pm.

This year The Taste of Michigan City Block Party and First Friday Art Walk will begin a day early August 2nd. This event features local restaurants, live entertainment and a local brew and wine garden in the Uptown Arts District in downtown Michigan City, and it begins at 4pm. From 4pm to 6pm a Super Boat will be on display at Lighthouse Place Premium Outlet. Meet the Race Teams, VIP event at Matey's Restaurant starts at 7pm, and then head back to Washington Park to enjoy the sounds of Roster McCabe, starting at 8pm.

Make plans to spend the day in Washington Park on Saturday, to enjoy the Classic Car show from 10am to 4pm, presented by the 4-A's Car Club Inc. The Skydive Horizonz Team will be jumping onto the beach on Saturday and Sunday around 10:30am each day. Try some of the wonderful food that will be offered by the food vendors. The dry pits and wet pits will be open to the public. This would be a good time to purchase your official Great Lakes Grand Prix program book and T-shirts, so you can be dressed properly and be ready for autographs at the Grand Prix Parade that will step off at 10th and Franklin Streets, at 6pm. Immediately following the parade the Super Boats will line up on Franklin Street and become a part of the Block Party. From noon-10pm the Taste of Michigan City Block Party, presented by the Michigan City Mainstreet Association continues in the Uptown Arts District. At 8pm please travel back to Washington Park to enjoy the Keith Scott Blues Band who will be playing until 11pm.

Sunday August 4th is Race Day. Stuart Glenn will be flying his Vultee Valiant BT13A airplane over the beach at approximately 10:30am. There are two races scheduled, one at 11am and on at 1pm. The silent auction to benefit The Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana/Michiana and Michiana Resources Inc. will be from 10am to 3pm and we have some great items on our auction table. Finally, join us after the race at Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa for the VIP awards ceremony at 5pm.
