A Griffith woman was arrested and charged with drunken driving after her vehicle came to rest upside down Sunday in the middle of U.S. 12 near Michigan City.

Morgan Strauch, 24, was being held in the LaPorte County Jail on Class D felony operating while intoxicated, Class A misdemeanor driving with a suspended license and one other count.

Emergency responders about 5:30 a.m. found her 2007 Honda CR-V on its roof in the middle of the eastbound lanes just east of the city limits, according to LaPorte County Police.

The investigation shows the SUV traveled 50 feet in a ditch and struck a drainage culvert then flipped back onto the four lane highway.

Strauch and her passenger, Emily Vandersluis, 26, sustained injuries not believed serious, police said.

The OWI charge against Strauch was upgraded to a felony due to a drunken driving conviction in Porter County last year, said police.
