MICHIGAN CITY | A major intersection linking Michigan City and LaPorte was scheduled to reopen Friday evening after being washed out during a storm last month.
LaPorte County Highway Department Superintendent Bob Young said traffic will be allowed back on Johnson Road at Pahs Road after old metal and rusted out drainage pipes at the intersection were replaced with longer lasting drain pipes made of concrete.
Rain that fell at about one inch per hour inundated the drainage system, allowing water to get underneath the road and wash away a section of the pavement. While Johnson Road is reopening, Young said Pahs Road will remain closed for another day or two.
He said NIPSCO must relocate a gas line before new drainage pipes can be installed on the Pahs Road side of that intersection. Young said the cost of the repairs had not yet been calculated.
