MICHIGAN CITY | A Michigan City area man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hand.
According to La Porte County police, 46-year old Rick Franko was in his garage when the mishap occurred Thursday evening at 6877 W. Rukmin Trail.
Franko said he was trying to open the slide on his .32 caliber handgun, according to police.
After applying some lubricating oil, he pulled on the rusty slide some more but it wouldn't move and he wound up pulling the trigger by accident, police said.
His wife came out and applied pressure to help slow the bleeding on his hand before paramedics showed up.
Police said the bullet left a hole in a shelf in the garage.
