LAPORTE COUNTY | A busy intersection near Michigan City is closed indefinitely after the pavement washed away during Wednesday's torrential rains.

The Johnson Road and Pahs Road intersection used heavily by motorists traveling back and forth between Michigan City and LaPorte is closed indefinitely.

Bob Young, LaPorte County Highway Department superintendent, said a 20-foot section of the northbound lane extending partly into the southbound lane washed away.

He said it's too early to establish a completion date but speculated it would be several weeks before the repair work is finished.

Funds must be secured and other work has to occur, such as relocating utility poles, before the work can proceed.

Drivers are advised to use the posted detours.

Officials reported 3.8 inches of rain fell in LaPorte over a four-hour period Wednesday morning.
