An investigation was still ongoing Tuesday into a miscarriage discovered after a pregnant LaPorte County Jail offender was shocked with a Taser.

LaPorte County Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer said among the things being looked into are whether the fetus died prior to or as a result of the Tasering.

"Your guess is as good as mine if they are going to be able to tell that or not," Mollenhauer said.

Video surveillance is being reviewed and witnesses questioned to determine if the use of the Taser was justified.

On Nov. 29, police said the 23-year-old pregnant offender was involved in a physical altercation with another female inmate.

A jail deputy was trying to break up the confrontation when taken to the floor by the pregnant offender.

Police said other jail deputies responded and when the pregnant inmate refused to comply with orders to release the jailer the Taser was used on the the pregnant woman, said police.

Mollenhauer said the offender was taken to IU Health LaPorte Hospital for an evaluation as a precaution due to her pregnancy.

During an examination, police said it was discovered the fetus was deceased.

Mollenhauer said the offender was booked into the jail Nov. 14 for an alleged probation violation and reported she was expecting a child.

However, the jailer who fired the Taser did not know she was pregnant, Mollenhauer said.

Mollenhauer said investigators were still waiting for test results before drawing any conclusions on the cause of death.

He said whether the mother had any drugs in her system will be among the results investigators look for in the outcome of the testing.

Further details will be released once the investigation is completed, which could be by the end of the week, he said.

"I don't want to say much more other than that," Mollenhauer said.
